It is used for demonstrating the reciprocal interaction of the magnetic poles. The needle is mounted on a base. There is a small hole in the middle of the needle, so that a vertical axle can hold the needle through the hole. The needle can rotate freely on the pivot.
How to use:
demonstrate the direction of the needle: turn the needle gently; after it stops, one end always faces south and the other north.
demonstrate the interaction of the magnetic poles: the two poles repel when they have same polarity; the two poles attract when they have opposite polarities.
compare the magnetic strengths: by putting two or more magnets at the same place near the needle to see the speed it turns.
check if there is a current in a cable and if yes, the direction of the current: place the needle near the cable to see if there is a bias of the needle; if yes, adopt Ampere Right Hand Principle to determine the direction of the cu
